BSc Degree Project

The Grotto

This project explores the recycling of material and energy found on site, primarily harnessing the residual energy of the decommissioned power station as well as translating the physical properties of seashells found at the beach.

The project began by experimenting with different techniques of folding and crumpling paper and observing how the added corrugations and curves gave a flat material, such as paper, a new 3-dimensional resistance to applied loads - an acquired structural capacity.  Linking the research on corrugation to the discarded bivalve shells found on site.  Made of a tough calciferous material, the corrugated surface of a shell protects the organism within offering shelter from both predators and external pressures of seawater.

In my design, the themes of recycling and shelter became fundamental, both equally as important in a harsh location such as Dungeness.  The hollow external envelope of the decommissioned PowerStation became the corrugated surface of the seashell, and the design became the soft organism within, creating a co-dependency between the old and new.  Contrasting the industrial and radiation to a natural and water-based idea that is a bathhouse.

My intention for the bathhouse was to create a design the focused heavily on the presence of water that took inspiration from the structural shapes and forms of seashells and grottos.  Drawing from the residual energy of the decommissioned power cores to heat the spaces and the waters to offer a refuge, an oasis, from the harsh climate of the desert.  A space inspired by Turkish Hammams, Roman and Japanese bathhouses, where individuals could mingle, or flirt, at a site that prides itself in its deliberate isolation.
